VW ID.3 - Recuperation

If you brake the ID.3 and the engine brake is applied, the car recovers energy, which charges the battery. This is called recuperation. The engine brake gets active at normal braking, before the actual brake kicks in. The amount of energy won by recuperation is considerable. Recuperation is worthwhile, increases the range and noticeably reduces travel costs. In the display of the car, you can recognize recuperation by the fact that the consumption value in kWh per 100 kilometers (or miles) has a minus sign. For example, if the value is -30 kWh / 100 km, then 30 kWh are recovered per 100 kilometers. Recuperation of course only works when the battery is not completely full and performs better when the battery level is low.

In normal driving gear D, the car slowly coasts to a stop on a plane road, which energetically is better than recupatating and accelerating again. The recuperation is particularly strong in gear B. In my experience, this is only worth it downhill, when the engine break should be used on purpose, e.g. at curvy roads. Then it will recover a surprising amount of energy and the brake pedal is hardly needed anymore.

So, driving with foresight and not braking at the last moment will save you energy, driving gear D usually is the right choice.
