VW ID.3 Over-the-Air Update
Quick summary: If you can't press the Install button, drive to a location where you have a network connection. Driving out of the garage may be enough.
Information about the over-the-air update for a Volkswagen ID.3
July 20, 2025. After turning off, the car reports that it wants to perform a software update. It's parked in the garage, which is a small one-car garage, and the garage door is still open. Pressing Update displays the following information screen.

Unfortunately, the Install button is grayed out, meaning it has no function. That's the correct name, even if it's not gray. Unfortunately, it doesn't say where the problem lies, or why you can't tap the button. The connection indicator shows a full connection for 4G (LTE). The ID.3 First doesn't support 5G anyway. However, the problem was probably still related to the connection. Because after driving out of the garage, the button was clickable. Incidentally, the connection outside the garage still showed 4G, even with one bar less, meaning it was worse. So, this indicator doesn't seem to be entirely reliable, or it only shows the connection speed with a very long delay.
When changing position of the car to install the update, it's important to make sure you stay parked where you can do so safely and without problems for several hours. This software update to version 3.8 actually took about two hours. During this time, you can't drive.
Standlicht ausschalten means Turn off the parking lights, this doesn't seem to be a request, since they were turned off, but rather a notification that they will be turned off.
An over-the-air update means that new software is installed over the mobile internet. Of course, this requires a connection. However, the fact that if you don't have a connection, this isn't communicated clearly isn't a good solution. You then have to puzzle over why it doesn't work, especially since the connection indicator indicates a connection. Hopefully, VW will include a corresponding notification in future versions.
